We choose to follow the Informed Choice Act which is currently active in the U.S. House of Representatives. As future nurses we believe that an ultrasound is a vital part of prenatal care for all women who are pregnant. We feel that it is important to provide health care to all women regardless of economic status.
The bill was introduced on January 6, 2009, by Republican Clifford Stearns of Florida who is the bill’s sponsor. No cosponsors exist. Ultrasounds would be provided by a licensed medical physician who is legally qualified to provide medical services to pregnant women. This bill would provide grant money to non-profit tax-exempt organizations such as community based free clinics which do not charge for any services provided. Results from these ultrasounds can provide basic information on the health of the fetus.
After receiving results from the ultrasound the woman is provided with unbiased information about options regarding pregnancy outcomes including childbirth, abortion, and adoption. We view this as a vital and necessary piece of equipment to all clinics; as it can provide vital information concerning baby, mother and family.
